AN OVERVIEW OF THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI RIVER Boszhardt, Robert F. Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 1725 State Street, La Crosse, WI 54601 Archaeological research of the Upper Mississippi floodplain since the late 1970's has identified an incredible cultural resource base that documents human/environmental interaction for at least the past 4,000 years. These sites demonstrate island stability for several millennia, while preserving cultural remains of a succession of cultures. Historic modifications dramatically diminished the archaeological record prior to modern agency management policies which are just now comprehending the nature of this irreplaceable resource base.
